When her Achronic Inverter proved incapable of meeting Vidiria’s ever-increasing energy needs, celebrated transphysicist Dula Jyrexil developed the Core Process, a radical new energy technology based on the power of the telepathic mind. By artificially stimulating and manipulating juvenile neural tissue, Jyrexil found she could produce astonishing quantities of energy from just a few brain cells. The Process would eventually form the basis of Nova Generator technology.

An unfortunate consequence of the Process’s popularity, however, was a massive rise in demand for juvenile neural tissue. As cloned and synthetic neurons couldn’t achieve the same results, fuel for Viridia’s generators was invariably harvested from live juvenile specimens traded from developing alien worlds, typically in exchange for greater development aid and more favorable tariff regimes.

While critics called the Process inhuman, Jyrexil cheerfully responded that this was precisely the point: without a continuous supply of fresh alien neural tissue, the generators would be forced to harvest the nervous systems of human children, a prospect both sides of the debate agreed was simply unacceptable—at least until Viridia Prime’s growing energy needs demanded the development of the Eloi Farms, which, we must remember, were initially designed by sad necessity and only later became infamous as the source of a highly-sought system-wide delicacy.
