Initiated in 5249 s.y.v.p. within the Ascacian Wastes, the Jaxpel Project was an attempt by the United Viridian Stellar Defense Forces to eliminate formidable Vermailian defense chancellors, Woxaj Sundire and Shalep Ulaar. The mission failed and was considered the final straw by the Vermailian Confederacy culminating in the Representative Assembly’s 5285 s.y.v.p. declaration of war.

The project involved covert infiltration of the Vermailian Confederacy military and was the brainchild of Lucretius Hom. The famous Black Eye unit, United Viridian Stellar Defense Forces, was selected as its disposable subjects. With mind conditioning, the soldiers were made loyal to the Vermailian Confederacy but were also given deep-psyche, sight-activated kill orders for the chancellors. Their reputation made them convincing pseudo-double-agents and put them in a position to have an audience with the chancellors.

The Jaxpel Project failed prominently and publicly. Scientists had anticipated paranoia, the primary side effect of Erasermind, but it would have been acceptable. The Black Eye soldiers had barely departed their drop point in the Evyl Nebula before ambient radiation destabilized the neuron deflection chemicals. With old memories contradicting their conditioning, the soldiers began to attack but were quickly suppressed. This trapped them in an intergalactic hostage crisis that played out for years; its connection to the Jaxpel Project was unknown for decades.
