Alua

Alua is the religion of the tribal Pulotu people. Historically, the Pulotu have been incredibly secretive about the tenets and practices of Alua, but certain base concepts have been learned. Alua literally means "two", and describes what the Pulotu people believe is an inherent duality in the soul. The two aspects are the Kahawai and the Nagadaan. The Kahawai aspect of the soul is concerned mainly with nature and preserving nature in its pristine state, whereas the Nagadaan aspect strives for intellectual and technical progress at all costs.

The Pulotu people believe that everyone is born with both of these aspects, but upon reaching adulthood everyone consciously makes a choice and casts out one of the aspects forever in a ritual called Manawapoutoro. Once a Pulotian makes their choice, they are two forego any behavior that could be seen as assisting the opposing aspect. Not doing so is reason to be banished from the tribe.

There is only one known case of a Pulotian refusing to choose upon reaching adulthood. Cid Highwind was banished by then Chief Elder Atapa Skarra, who also served as Vizier to Septarch Quintillian and clashed again with Highwind during the Oversight Committee.
